Candles have always been used in homes, but until recently, were considered to be utilitarian. For some time now, we have thought of candles as accessories, romantic mood lighting, part of flower arrangements and centerpieces, aroma therapy, and a way to find your way around the house when the lights go out.

 

Originally, they were used for light and warmth. Well, guess what! You still can use them that way, and it will save a bit on your electric bill, as well. A candle, when covered by a glass chimney, and placed in front of a mirror, gives off a surprising amount of light. 

 

If you have toddlers, and are afraid to have lighted candles around, you can still increase the power of your light bulb by placing mirrors strategically near light sources such as lamps or windows, and allowing for reflection. And while you’re at it, use compact fluorescent light bulbs, will you? They will save you bundles on your electric bill, give you better, more natural light, and the house will look larger as an extra benefit of using those mirrors.

Did you know that plants not only take the carbon dioxide out of the air you breathe, converting it to oxygen, but also neutralize formaldehyde and polyethelenes, which are exuded by paints, flooring and some types of furniture? So don’t be surprised if growing a spider plant, snake plant, bamboo, or English ivy in your home causes your respiratory problems to diminish. In fact, just as aquariums ease stress levels and lower blood pressure, so do tending live plants in your home. And don’t forget to talk to them! It doesn’t matter what you say…it is the composition of your breath that helps them to flourish.   This is particularly true of African violets!
