Woven by hand with needle and thread, using natural materials indigenous to the area, the craft of basket weaving provides rural African women with jobs and the income necessary to support themselves and their children.

Fair Wages for Gifted Generations

African women have a rich heritage of basket weaving that has been passed down through the generations. Handmade baskets produced according to fair trade standards benefit women and families in rural regions of Africa who are coping with severe economic uncertainty.

Throughout history, baskets have been used for storage or the transportation of goods. In modern times, African baskets have become appreciated for decorative use in addition to functional purposes. Fair trade practices and payment allow the women to maintain their heritage and craft through basket weaving, while earning a fair wage and the income necessary to provide the basics, such as food, health care and education for their families.

Natural & Organic – Eco-friendly Baskets

African baskets are typically woven of organic materials, such as grasses or leaves indigenous to the area of the weavers, and are dyed using the natural colors from vegetables or fruits. African baskets reflect the highest quality of skilled craftsmanship, as each basket is woven by hand, often with needle and thread. Some baskets can take over one month to complete.

African Baskets – Designs & Uses

Sizes and shapes of baskets vary between large and small, shallow or deep, and can include open or lidded designs. You can find a wide variety of colors and patterns ranging from the traditional and symbolic to more modern and contemporary designs. With the variety of designs available, African baskets can make attractive decorative baskets, serving baskets, or hanging wall baskets.

For functional use, you can use shallow coil baskets as serving baskets, or you can organize mail, newspapers, and car keys that often clutter kitchen counters, tables, and desktops. Many African serving baskets are also designed with a loop for hanging and can be used to create unique arrangements for wall display. And, you can always create an eco-friendly centerpiece by using a serving basket made from organic materials and dyes by simply adding natural fruits and vegetables.
