Sulcata tortoise (African spur thigh)?

when putting the heating pad under the tank should it be under the side that his house is on..and should it be on during the day with the uvb light an the heat lamp..or should it be only turnd on at night ..plus i know temperature is very important so what is the highest temp the floor should be…im also looking into a tortoise table where would the heat pad go in one of those..i know they are grazers Anyone recommend a place to order seed mixes i can grow for my lil cutie

Heat from a light above is always better for hatchlings. If you think about the areas they inhabit in the wild, the heat does not come from below, it comes from the sun heating the terrain. Also heat pads and hot rocks ARE NOT RECOMMENDED because they are dangerous and can burn tortoises and turtles.

Good habitat set ups are not cheap and take a bit of time to get set up, but once they’re set up properly, it does get easier to maintain.

You’ll need two or three types of lighting turned on for 10-12 hours per day (appliance timers work really well to ensure the proper times):

An incandescent light bulb should be placed on the top of the tank or tortoise table opposite the side with the hiding spot to provide your tortoise with a warm basking spot. Depending on the size of your tank or tortoise table and the temp in the room, anywhere from a 15 watt to a 75 watt bulb can be used (cooler room = stronger light for more heat). Place a thermometer under the bulb on the ground where your tortoise will bask and make sure the temperature reaches 95-105 degrees when the light is on. If not, adjust the wattage of the bulb accordingly. A second thermometer should be placed at the other (cool) end of tank to make sure that side is at least 10-20 degrees cooler than the basking side so you don’t cook your hatchling! This light should be turned off for the night. You’ll want to monitor temperatures frequently as they’ll fluctuate with the temperatures of the room they are in.

If your house gets colder than 72 degrees at night, a black or blue light should be used to bring the temperature up to 75-80 degrees.

Last but not least, you’ll need a florescent UVA/UVB light. This light replicates the sun’s rays which radiate vitamin D3, helping the animal to absorb calcium into their body. The light needs to be placed within 8-12 inches of the tortie’s basking spot in order to be effective. The light should be replaced every 6-12 months. This light should be turned off for the night as well, remember you’re replicating the sun with this light.

The bedding you’re using is OK, but you may want to try Hay at the next cleaning, it’s easier to change out for cleaning purposes and less expensive than the Alfalfa Pellets, and safe for them to munch on as well.
