Do you want to keep an interesting and unique pet that will be different from anything your friends own? If you like frogs, you might want to consider purchasing an African Claw Frog. African Clawed Frogs are a good choice for someone who has never owned an amphibian before because they are relatively easy to care for. Keep in mind, however, that they can easily live for 15 years or even more, so be sure you are ready to commit to one of these animals before you make a purchase.

Setting Up the Home

Before you bring your African Clawed Frog home, you need to make certain you have its home prepared and ready for your new pet to move right in. Since these frogs are so large – measuring about 4 to 5 inches in size – you will need to purchase a good sized tank for your frog. At the very least, you should have a 10 gallon tank for each frog you plan to keep.

Since frogs are aquatic animals, you will also need to put plenty of water in its habitat. The water should be about 12 inches deep, with 6 inches being the absolute minimum. This way, your pet will be able to get an enjoyable swim while also being able to easily get to the surface when necessary. You will, however, need to include a gravel substrate as well as some decorations such as wood, rocks and other items that your frog can use whenever it wants to hide.

You also need to be certain to keep the temperature at about 68 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, which shouldn’t be too difficult since this is about room temperature. Unlike some other amphibians and reptiles, you don’t need to use special lighting in the tank, but you should try to make sure your pet gets about 12 hours of dark and 12 hours of light each day.

Feeding Your African Clawed Frog

African Clawed Frogs are not particularly picky when it comes to the foods they eat. In fact, they will eat a wide variety of insects, including those that are living as well as those that are not. Many are also happy to dine on floating reptile sticks, but it is still a good idea to feed your pet a variety of different foods in order to provide it with a well-balanced diet. Some good choices for your pet include:

o Bloodworms

o Brine Shrimp

o Earthworms

o Guppies

o Waxworms

Your African Clawed Frog may even eat cat food or dog food! Regardless of what you feed to your pet, make sure to only feed the amount of food your frog will eat in 10 to 15 minutes. This way, the water won’t become clouded and dirty with uneaten food. At the same time, it is important for you to take care to avoid overfeeding your pet frog. Overeating is more of a problem than under eating for these pets, so cut back on the amount of food you are feeding if your frog starts to get overweight.
