ANYONE know how to fix a LAVA LAMP?

OK, well, a few weeks ago, while in this ancient trail thingy, I bought a good ol 'lamp Lava three dollars. well, needless to say, is that the lady was wrong when he said it works very well. I currently have: Liquid Color blue wax on it, a ring about an inch thick, more or less on top and a ring about 2-3 inches at the bottom (wax). But when is switched on (and wait the recommended 20-60 minutes, even up to 3 hours) doesn't melt the wax! What should I do?!
