Light Metering (Spot, Reflective, Incident). When to use each?

I am taking an online photography course and my assignment is to explain which metering system (Spot, Reflective, or Incident) would be best to use for a list of different scenarios. And I am only allowed to use the light that is indicated in each scenario which are:

An incident light meter is universally the most accurate, since it reads the actual light falling on the subject, so the reading will always be the same whether the object is black, white or some interesting colour. It is not dependent upon the amount of light the object reflects back to the camera and film (sensor). I use my incident light meter primarily when shooting medium and large format cameras. It is also the only meter I use when setting up studio lighting at certain lighting ratios (standard portrait 1:3, high key and low key 1:1 or 1:1.5 or other more dramatic shots where each light is assigned a certain foot/candle setting).

The internal light meters in your SLR or DSLR are reflective light meters and you have to get a feel for how certain colours and shades reflect light. The meter will attempt to view the scene as an 18% grey card, so if you are shooting a white on white shot, the resulting image will be gray. The same is true if you are shooting a subject that is basically black on black, your image will come back as an 18% grey shot.

Spot meters are reflective light meters but only look at a specific part of the images frame, usually the part of the frame you want to be exposed “perfectly”.

I usually use the center weighted light meter mode on my camera because over the past 35 years, that is the kind of meter I got used to using on a DSLR or 35 mm SLR and know how to get a perfect exposure using it. I do use the spot meter when I am using a super wide angle lens, so I can choose which part of the total scene I want to meter.

NOTE:

Outdoors on a sunny day, Under trees on a sunny day, in an apartment w/ only window light, snow scene on a sunny day, and an architectural scene on a sunny day.

Each of these situations can be metered perfectly using an incident light meter.

If you are shooting a snow scene and have to use a reflective light meter, you will have to open up the exposure from 1 to 2 stops so the snow does not turn grey.

I don’t know what your instructor is attempting to do with this question since most people don’t walk around with an incident light meter AND a reflective spot meter in their pocket. Those meters cost more than some lenses.

Here at the two meters I used when attending Brooks. The Sekonic Studio was the most used of the two.
