Have you ever stopped to think about how much we rely on gas and electricity during the cold months of the year? Most of us do, but it’s usually in terms of how big our bill is, or will be when we get it.

You’ve probably seen or heard of the survivalist movement, those guys who are convinced that WW3 is coming, or that this year, (DEFINITELY this year, this time), oil will run dry or that we should all prepare for the imminent invasion by whoever.

They can come off as nutty, but they do have some valid points – right now I’m talking about power and gas to your home. Many people never stop to think just how fragile these systems are, all it takes is a nasty winter storm, say a truck taking out the transmissions lines, and/ or a major leak or fire that shuts down gas to your side of town. Do a quick research and you will find that this exact scenario has happened a number of times.

I’m not talking end of the world stuff here, rather just realistic advice for say several days of power or gas outage. If you don’t think this is serious stuff, just remember what your house feels like when you come home and the heating has been off. Then imagine you CAN’T have a hot shower and can’t make a hot coffee.

1. Get some good warm clothes. Hang on, you have warm clothes…but are they practical for extended indoor use? Jackets and coats get hooked on stuff everywhere. Thermal underwear for men or for women is really good nowadays, is comfortable and will keep you very warm indeed. Its probably the best investment you can make for a power or gas outage scenario.

2. Find an alternative method to heat food or water. Hot drinks or soups are not just for sustenance, the comfort factor is very important. I have a little gas cooker I take camping, and I’ve used it very successfully to make tea and coffee at home when the electric kettle is out of commission. These things are cheap and don’t take up much space.

3. Have some form of lighting you can fall back on. Nothing fancy, candles work, but best is a battery powered led or fluorescent light. Of course any torch will get you out of trouble, but if you pick up a lamp designed to light up a room you will appreciate it later. Again these battery lanterns are relatively cheap, and will make you a lot more comfortable.

There it is folks, as I said this isn’t end of the world stuff, but for about 60 dollars you can buy yourself peace of mind when the power goes.
