I have some questions about my new baby black throat monitor I got yesterday ?

Hes about 1 ft long and badass looking lol. Ok here are the questions

“I fed him a pinky yesterday, then he pooped it out and it looked like it wasnt even close to digested why?”……………………….Your temps are to low. A well heated monitor can digest most anything.

“I put 2 lamps over his hot spot and i have the thermometer on the rock i got him for basking and it currently says 117 degrees and slowly rising(Thats with the heat censor touching the top of the rock). That ok?”………………………..117F is too low a basking temp. 130F should be considered MINIMUM. My Sav will bask on a surface temp of 150F once and a while. You could get that basking temp with just one 45 watt halogen flood bulb and you need and inferred thermometer to measure surface temps, not a probe thermometer.

“He has a good dark hide right under his rock so is it better to keep the lights on 24/7? Cuz when I turn them off it gets like 60-70ish in his cage. But I know they need 12hrs on 12hrs off lighting. But a guy with 15yrs exp with his monitors says he runs 24/7″………………….. If your BT has a nice DEEP substrate to burrow in then you can run your basking lights 24/7 to keep your heat up. Just remember its not the 24/7 light that is important, its the 24/7 HEAT that is provided by the lamps that is. Many successful keepers and breeders run 24/7 lights and heat.

Heres an analogy: Lets say you wanna “tame” a wild squirrel or a wolf or a feral cat in the wild. You wouldnt grab the squirrel / wolf / feral cat and force handle it until it gives in and likes you (That would be funny to see though. “here puppy puppy puppy, my what big teeth you have!”. hahahahahahah) You try to get it used to you by just being around first , getting it to first tolerate your presence before anything else. Then eventually one day you start to tempt it closer to you with food. Eventually overtime that damn wild animal might even sit on you or next to you and take food from your fingers, IF YOU NEVER EVER TOUCH IT! Its the same thing with monitors. By constantly handling a monitor in the hopes that it will “tame”your actually teaching it that your a NEGATIVE experience and it will hate you! But by associating your self with something positive like food the animal starts seeing you in a positive light and will one day start coming to you for food. That is how you begin the “taming” process. Remember a “tame” monitor will still not let you pick it up for the most part and handling for the hell of it is still bad, but it will not be scared of you and will actually come to you too see whats up (food????????)”

P.S. The “tub training” method that “Korey” stated is animal abuse and should NEVER be used. Also chicken harts and gizzards are NEVER recommended due to the fact that they are nutritionaly incompleate food item.
