Your ceiling is at least one sixth of the room’s surface area; however, it is all too often neglected and simply given a coat of white paint. White has long been considered the only suitable color for ceilings. While there is nothing wrong with this and in some cases, white is perfect for a ceiling, but not even considering the possibility of other colors represents a lost opportunity.
In general, a ceiling painted lighter than the walls makes the ceiling seem higher, and vice versa – this can create a feeling of coziness in a high-ceiling room. Any time you’re painting any surface in a room, you should think about the light which the room receives. Natural light can make a light blue or pink ceiling lend an airy, spacious feel to a room – but candlelight in conjunction with a bright red can give a warm glow.
Paint Finish: Ceiling paint is usually flat, but using eggshell or satin finish paint can add a welcome touch of sheen. However, make sure that your ceiling is in good shape – a high sheen paint can reveal flaws. Keep in mind that while painting your ceiling can add visual interest to the room, you may want to keep things simple so that the ceiling does not prove distracting.
Classic White
In many rooms, white really is the best color for the ceiling. White ceilings tend to be less noticeable, with the eye drawn instead to the furnishings and the walls. White ceilings can offset and sharpen the look of brightly colored walls. A white ceiling will also appear higher. It can also make the room appear larger of the walls are painted a light color. A white ceiling can also make a room which doesn’t get a lot of natural light seem brighter.
Which white paint should you use? A stark white can be too plain; however, you can find whites with a wide range of undertones, with one which can complement any décor.
Contrast Color
The color you choose for your ceiling can change the feel of a room and even change your perception of the space. The conventional wisdom is that low ceilings need to be painted a light color. This is not always necessary. Try using a dark base and a glaze of the same color. The glaze softens the color and provides enough sheen to prevent the ceiling from making the room seem dark.
These are all good colors for a ceiling:
1 Blush pink
2 Warm tan
3 Sky blue
4 Pale peach
5 Butter yellow
Match Wall Color
Using the same color for every surface in the room can be a mistake. This can often make the room appear smaller; instead, leave the ceiling as an area of lighter contrast. However, some do prefer this look and a monochrome scheme can give a small room a soothing aura which works well for a bedroom or bathroom. Used in a larger room, this can draw attention to the furnishings rather than the walls or ceiling.
To use a lighter variation of the wall colors on your ceiling, use the same color diluted with white paint; a four parts wall color to one part white paint ratio works well. This can work well in a room which has an unusual shape and can give large rooms a cozy feeling.
Architectural Considerations
Vaulted, cathedral, or multiangled ceilings as well as attic ceilings present a little difficulty; however, carrying the same color from walls to ceiling can simplify matters. You can use some tricks like adding a chair rail and slightly varying the hue on either side or adding stripes, which can also make the ceiling appear higher.
Where Ceiling Meets Wall: Trim and molding make things a little easier, since you are given an obvious point to stop one color and start another. However, even sans molding you can change colors wherever surfaces meet. However, you will want to make sure to use tape to demarcate these borders when painting. An uneven line is not desirable here.
With a cathedral ceiling, changing colors where wall meets ceiling will draw the eye to the living space instead of the ceiling. Keep in mind that paint is not the only way to add color to your ceiling. You can try using wood paneling to cover your ceiling to create a warm and unusual look.
