The first salt lamps were sold about 10 years ago as souvenirs in various gift shops in Poland. Not many people knew about them at the time and even now, there are people who are amazed when they see one of these beautiful pieces.

Salt lamps are basically crystal salt rocks that are carved into different shapes with a hollow inner center to allow adding a bulb or a candle for illuminating the place. This emits a warm glow from the sides of the rock which is very soft and gives a very comfortable feeling. The emitted colors range from soft pink to a nice pale orange.

Today salt lamps are used as night lights or in combination with floor lamps to add that soft, ambient lighting to the room. Many health food stores, reiki healing centers and spas have them regularly. They offer a very relaxing atmosphere that enhances creativity and enables a deeper meditation.

We know that salt takes in the moisture from the air, so having such a lamp in the house helps with reducing the moisture levels in the room. Of course the main purpose for such a lamp is aesthetic appeal, however that is not the only reason why it is so popular these days. The salt lamp is actually considered an air purifier as it reduces the bacteria in the air by taking away the moisture that these microscopic creatures like to thrive in. Some manufacturers actually suggest that you should leave the lamp on continuously, however that might pose another set of problems, namely fire hazard of electrical problems in the house.

Caring for it is not difficult at all. Upon purchase it usually comes in a wooden box that collects the salt dripping and melting that occurs when in use. This will also protect the night stand or any surface where it is placed on. To remove any dust particles, it should be cleaned at times with a damp cloth followed by a dry cloth.

The price ranges depending on how big the crystal is and how warm the bulb or the candle can make it. However they are very reasonable priced and more and more people are buying them to enhance their living rooms or even their bedroom which along with floor lamps make any room comfortable, cozy and look very stylish.
