If you have a special evening event upcoming and are looking for a relatively simple and inexpensive way to provide a festive atmosphere, consider adding a selection of outdoor party lights. Once the sun sets and the party starts, all will be impressed with the whimsical way in which you incorporated outdoor lighting into your party decorating scheme. These lights come in a variety of styles, sizes, shapes, and colors. They are designed as lamp post lights, umbrella lights, wall sconces, string lights and hanging lanterns and can be adapted for use in almost any party theme.

Today, many people spend lots of time, effort and money in the design of outdoor areas of their home. There numerous ways in which to utilize their outdoors during the day, but once darkness descends on the property, a lack of adequate lighting makes this major investment all but unusable. But, with the proper planning and use of the different type outdoor lights, this issue can easily be overcome. For instance, on the outside wall of your home, add wall sconces every ten feet or so to light the back yard or patio area immediately behind the house. For areas such as walkways or pathways that may lead to gathering or garden areas, consider some type of post mounted lighting or path lighting. If electricity is not readily available in these areas, there are several outdoor party lights that operate off of solar power. If the solar gathering cell is well placed and receives adequate sunlight, a modern solar light can burn well after the last party goer has departed.

Should you not wish to permanently place posts throughout the pathways on your property, consider lightweight wrought iron posts that can be placed in the ground for use during the party and then removed after wards. For a true outdoor feel, hang lanterns or lighted torches on these temporary posts. Both of these are classic favorites and are available in models that will burn camping fuel, or if you will have several small children around, you might be better served to use solar or battery powered lantern models.

Even if you are wanting to use lighting for purposes other than outdoor party lights, many of the lighting types discussed above will be useful for other purposes. If your intent is strictly to light your property for safety and security, you may consider the addition of some motion activated fixtures for deterring unwanted intruders on your property. Otherwise, the theory in a general lighting plan would be very similar to lighting for a party. In either case, brightly light the function areas and highlight special details for a well thought out general or party lighting plan.

Interior design advice – guest bedroom?

I have a guest bedroom that has a black cast iron double bed frame, white double wardrobe (Ikea Hemnes), white bedside tables matching the wardrobe, cream walls and cream curtains. I have just moved house and therefore cannot afford to buy new furniture and I want to keep the cream walls so advice required on what else I can do to put some colour into the room…

What colour bedding and accessories does anyone recommend? I don’t want a bland room but don’t want something too personal as it is the guest room so could have a whole mixture of ages staying i.e. parents, or mates! I can afford to buy brand new bedding, throws, cushions, bedside lamps and accessories. The master bedroom is crisp white bedding, cream walls, oak furniture which splashes of deep red so don’t want the guest room to be the same.
