When you’ve been manufacturing skylights for the last 3 decades you’ll get all kinds of questions. Here is one we get that we thought would be worth writing about:

“Why does our bathroom skylight drip water onto the floor when it’s cold outside, even when it’s not raining?”

Most of the time this happens right after you take a shower. But sometimes your heater can do the trick also.

The problem is you have little or even no ventilation in your bathroom. Without ventilation, warm air created by your shower has no place to go. So the inside of your skylight is warm, but it’s winter time, so the outside of your skylights are cold. When this happens, your bathroom skylight will act like a dehumidifier and condense the moist air into water.

You know when you make a cold glass of water or tea? You’ll see condensation build up on the side of the glass until it drops to the floor. This is the same thing that’s going on with your skylight.

Ok, now that we know what’s going on, how do we fix it? It’s not that difficult really. The problem is moist air. So you’re trying to eliminate or minimize that. You need a good bathroom exhaust fan to control and remove it from your bathroom. An exhaust fan discharges the moist air outside the home and pulls in fresh air.

If you already have a bathroom exhaust fan, then just use it every time you take a shower. It’s a good idea to turn it on fifteen minutes prior and turn off fifteen minutes afterwards.

If you don’t have an exhaust fan, then you need to have one installed. It involves carpentry, electrical and ventilation skills, so you might want to hire a contractor.

Another thing you want to check, is what type of skylight you have. Is it a single dome or single glass unit? This can be the sole problem in many cases. You want to make sure you have a double dome or insulated glass unit. This creates more insulation between the inside and outside of your home. It will reduce the occurrence of condensation, but not totally eliminate it.

Please HELP….does anyone know where to find a fan/chandelier?

I need a fan for my cathedral ceiling in my dining room, but I also need a chandelier for dining. The fan will be mounted either flush to the ceiling or on a 4 foot downrod. However, we also need a chandelier… Has anyone ever seen a fan/chandelier combo where the chain of the chandelier actually connects to the center of fan? I know… seems strange, but is it possible? My husband seems to think he can “rig it,” I’d rather find one created by a professional. (-;

If your ceiling is at any bit of an angle like most cathedral ceilings, you will have to use a down rod. You would not want to place a hugger style fan on an angled ceiling. As far as buying this setup, I would have to say I have never heard or seen of any. But I am sure they are out there (rare=expensive). Give your guy a chance. It is possible to rig but just keep in mind the weight of both the fan and the light you choose should not weigh more than the box in the ceiling is rated for. Good luck…
