The market leader, in the UK, of these is Micromark. They also sell abroad (sometimes under different names). They are moderately priced kits, giving some excellent effects, but are not suitable for the main lighting in a room, since they are too dim. Similarly for outside lighting they give excellent effects in the dark, but do not expect them to give practical lighting to see by; they are much the same as solar lamps – possibly a little brighter.

There are indoor versions, which can be used in most places indoors, e.g. kitchen plinths, on stairs, skirting boards. dado rails, ceilings, etc., They can be used in bathroom ceilings, but avoid their use above a bath or in a shower. These are either round or rectangular, available in chrome or brass, and mounted on the surface (although they are only a few mm. thick.

There are also outdoor versions, which can be used indoors as well, if desired. These are all round and either 15mm or 30mm diameter. They are most often used in decking, but wherever they are used a hole must be drilled into the surface they are to be fitted. The wiring comes out of the back of each light, and all this can be hidden under the decking or whatever.

Both versions work with a regulated mains adaptor working at 12V, so they are very safe, and use very little electricity, so many people leave them on permanently. The adaptor with the basic kits powers a limited number of lights, but more can be added by buying an expandable kit, and some add-on lights.

Some kits come with a remote control, but this can be purchased separately for those that do not have one. The controller (either directly or through the remote control) can give 3 different flow speeds, can be frozen on one colour or be sound activated.

Colour Changing LED Bulbs

Single bulbs are also available, which contain the colour changing electronics within the bulb. These can be put in place of a conventional similar bulb, or in a fitting which takes them. The bulbs themselves are suitable for indoor or outdoor use, but if using outdoors, make sure the light fitting itself is suitable for this. The most common bulbs are GU10s, which replace halogen GU10s, and bayonet or screw fitting round bulbs (golf ball size). If several bulbs are to be used together in different fittings, note the colour changing will not be synchronised, as they are with the kits.

I have been asked several times if it is possible to ‘colour wash’ a wall with these bulbs or kits. The answer is you will not get much of such an effect above about 30 to 50 cm up or down a wall. They give a much better effect by looking directly at the lights.

Is there supposed to be a piece of paper between the ceiling fan and light kit wiring?

We are installing one and there is a piece of paper there that says “Danger – High Voltage – Do not remove cover”. Are they saying that the piece of paper is a cover and it should be left in there? Seems like a fire hazard to me.

If the paper is the disc shaped one that is under the wiring in the fan control housing it is there to serve as an insulator between the wires and the metal cover.
