Compact fluorescent bulbs – anyone else have this problem?
I find that when I use compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL’s) upside down they burn out just as fast as regular incandescent bulbs.
Most of the rooms in my home have ceiling fans with light fixtures. These light fixtures all state to use a maximum 75 watt light bulb. So when I use a CFL I use one that has an equivalent rating to 75 watts. But they all burn out just as fast as ever.
When I remove a burned out CFL it smells strongly of burned electronics, so I suspect that they are getting way too hot.
Is there a requirement that CFL’s only be used with the screw end down? Or is something else going on here. So far, I am totally turned off to the CFL’s as wasteful.
I should mention that when used right side up in a table lamp the CFL’s last a very long time. They just burn out really fast when the screw end is on top.
By “not enclosed” you mean no globe? Seems that would not be very attractive. Or can the type made for fans be inclosed in a globe?
I recently purchased about 30 CF bulbs of various sizes and watts. I’d say about 8-10 have burned out in the first 3 months. The first two were in the kitchen mounted up side down and were probably left on 6 or 8 hours at a time. Then a couple more and one here and there every couple weeks. We have a few motion switches in our house where only the dimmable ones work properly. 3 of 4 have burned out in less than 3 months.
Talk about wasting money. I’ll stick to my long lasting incandescent and halogen bulbs.
