A simple and quick way to increase the efficiency of some heating appliance is with a heat powered fan. These fans generate their own electricity from heat and will blow air away from your heating appliance into your room.

These fans are typically made for wood or gas stoves. They are placed on the top of your stove so the base can absorb heat. At the top of the unit there are cooling fins which are cooled by the air that the fan blows. The difference in temperature between the top and bottom creates an electric current that powers the fan.

The advantage of a heat powered fan is that it doesn’t consume electricity. This also means you can have a fan on your stove without a need for electric wiring. This is great for a stove that doesn’t have an outlet nearby or an off grid location.

The fan only blows a small amount of air but it’s enough to circulate the hot air away from your stove and into the living space of your home instead of it just rising to the ceiling. As the fan blows the hot air away from the stove cooler air can flow in around the stove. The cooler air can absorb more heat than the hot air will so this results in more heat being extracted from your stove.

As the heat is directed into your living space your home can have a more even heat and feel more comfortable. A heat powered fan only moves a small amount of air which may sound like a disadvantage. This is actually desirable and can be an advantage since it’s enough to move the warm air but not enough to create enough of a draft that could make the air feel cooler.

Roaches coming in from ceiling vent – help?

We live in a condo (downstairs) and in the master bath, where the ceiling vent/fan is, roaches are getting in. They are crawling out. I don’t know if the guy upstairs is roach infested or what. Other than duct taping the vent shut, is there anything I can do? I am afraid to put poison up there because I don’t know where it will blow to.
My house is spotless. They’re coming in through that one spot from outside. I don’t live in a grimy place.

I can’t call a landlord because we own this place.
I don’t have a landlord. I have a homeowners association.

I have two cats and an aquarium with fish. I am afraid to use poison.

First, what NOT to do:

1. Do not fog the house. The fumes are likely to cause an explosion and/or poison your neighbor, not to mention your fish.

2. Don’t waste your money on roach traps or bait stations. They’re 100% worthless.

Now, what to do (in order):

1. Collect a sample roach… there’s probably one dead somewhere.

2. Go to http://images.yahoo.com and type in cockroach.

3. Look for your roach among the pictures to identify it.

Once you’ve identified it, ONLY THEN can you effectively treat it. Here’s some tips for the most common roaches:

GERMAN: This is the roach that gives all other roaches a bad name. Hire a professional – you can’t handle this one yourself. Find one that will make a deal with both of you if he/she can get into both apartments on the same day every time your treatment is due. German roaches CAN be cured!

ORIENTAL: Look outside for plastic under gravel, logs, landscape timbers and the like. Places that hold moisture like these areas are very attractive and will sustain a population. These roaches often wander inside, especially in extreme heat, cold or during heavy rainfall.

AMERICAN: Find the water source. These roaches need extra water and drying up their water source will discourage their return.

FIELD: These look a LOT like German roaches, but are found outside only. Treat them like Oriental roaches and be sure to rake leaves and trim plants at least a few inches above the ground to reduce harboarages.

OTHER: A general treatment from a pest control company might do the trick.

4. Check all the weatherstripping and replace any that is damaged/worn. You said they are coming in from a spot outside… Since you know where they’re coming in, repair that spot.
