It is still a very grey area for many people, but identifying when something is wrong with your central heating system is very important, and should be taken seriously. The boiler and the radiators often get neglected because they just work in the background of the hectic home life and no-one ever really thinks to check on things. Strange Sounds

If you hear any strange noises, this could mean there is an internal fault that needs looking at. You won’t be able to get to it yourself, or even be able to see where the noise is coming from, but a trained engineer will. As a homeowner, you’re not expected to go testing the boiler. The safest thing is to just check if your radiators are working, but even this can be dangerous when they get very hot, so the safest option is just to call an engineer round to test everything.

Water Noises

Hearing a water gurgling sound from your radiators doesn’t necessarily mean you need to panic. In fact, this is a very common problem. The solution is to bleed the radiators, as it is trapped air that is causing the gurgling water. This can be done in about 5-10 minutes, but make sure you have a small bowl ready to catch any excess water that gets released from the radiator. You don’t need an engineer out to do this, but if you are elderly or really apprehensive about doing it, an engineer will happily bleed your radiators for you.

Humming

An odd ‘humming’ sound is also a common problem with the typical central heating system. This is generally caused by the pump sending the water round the system too fast, in which case it needs to be turned down to a slightly lower setting. There are also other internal issues that could be the cause so, if in doubt, call the engineer out to take a look.

Creaks

Most people have heard the central heating ‘creak’ as the house heats up when you have the central heating turned on. This is due to the pipes rubbing on walls / floor materials as they expand due to warmth, so it is perfectly natural to hear some odd creaking sounds every now and then when you turn the central heating system on. If you haven’t had it on for many months then you may notice this noise more.

Of course, if you notice something is wrong with your central heating system, or even if it just sounds a bit different to usual, the best advice is to call the engineer round to give it a thorough check and put your mind at ease.

What is wrong with my ceiling fan?

My ceiling fan had been working fine. Then all of a sudden it was stuck “On”. When I opened the unit, the multi-switch turned out to have basically blown apart (mechanically). I tried to replace it, but the fan still does not seem to work.
When I think it should be working, it just emits a low hum and I can feel it vibrating, but the blades won’t spin.
So why is it not turning normally?
Yeah, it has a capacitor. Maybe I should have mentioned that. I don’t have a meter to check capacitance, I just have a multimeter. Anyway, yes, it ran with the switch broken. The switch had popped open so that the connections were still together, but the switching mechanism was apart from the wires.
I can’t check the capacitor, but what Dan described sounds exactly like my problem.

i’ll assume that when it was stuck on it was turning normally,just wouldnt turn off by the damaged switch???..if so,it might still be mechanically ok…assuming wiring is correct,,it might have a bad run capacitor [,or run capacitor got disconnected when you were replacing switch],i’m not sure if all ceiling fans have them…it would be a small part,maybe an inch or 2 long,,usually round or oval…it will have info printed on it such as “5uf 120volt” or ” 7.5uf 240 volt”..usually will have 2 wires going to it from the motor…you could check if you have a meter,,maybe just easier to replace it,,has to be the same microfarad,abbreviated “uf” or “mfd” and same or higher rated voltage… typical symptom for a bad capacitor is the motor wont start on its own but if you start it by hand it will run,but will be a little slow and draw excess current and eventually shut off on internal overload…hope this helps,,,,dan
