Is this load correct for the wiring that was used? see details?
Our church had 2 ceiling fans. Each fan had its own control mounted on the back wall of the santuary. What fed the fans, via the controls, was a single 12 gage wire that splits off near the variable controls. From the controls to the fans was more 12 gage. That worked for many years. Recently due to summer heat the church bought 6 new fans to replace the 2 old fans. They hired an electrician to install the 6 new fans. The electrician kept the 12 gage feed but made 2 runs with 3 fans each on 14 gage. The next Sunday it was a little warm so someone turned the fans up on medium. After about 1 1/2 hours the control boxes were so hot you could not leave your hand on them. I immediately turned the fans off. The electrician was called back out. He replaced the rotating controls with some (heavier?) slide versions. Question: Even with heavier duty controls, does it sound like the load to gage wire ratio to be correct? 3 fans on 14 gage? 6 fans on a single 12 gage?
The wire is just fine. You may need higher wattage controls. Some heat is normal on a fan control. Not to hot to touch, but warm is normal. One 12 gage wire will carry enough electricity to power 24 to 48 fans depending on their size. One, 14 gauge wire will power from 9 to 18 fans. With three fans on each control the control should be rated for up to 300 watts, depending on the total watts of the fans. Electrical parts and wires are rated for 140 degrees minimum and often more than that without damage. Email if you have more questions.
Some of the answers here are just plain wrong, and were given by untrained and unqualified people who know nothing about electricity or the electric codes. Sean and rawstuff, you guys need to get some training or stop giving electrical advice.
