Ceiling fan wiring question?
I’m trying to upgrade our existing ceiling fan. The old one did not have a light on it. I purchased a new fan with a light and also a remote control.
I removed the old fan and I have a black, white, red, and ground wire coming from the ceiling. They were hooked up to the black, white, blue, and ground (respectively) of the old ceiling fan.
The new fan has a receiver (for the remote) that has two input wires (red and white) and three outputs (blue, white, and black). I’m not sure if I can hook the red and white wires coming out of the ceiling to the red and white wires coming into the receiver and ignore the black wire coming out of the ceiling.
I should also mention that I think I was wired for a fan with lights as there is a switch next to the fan switch that never did anything.
Sorry to be such a wiring moron, but any help would be appreciated!!!
Your old fan was wired Black/Black, White/White, Red/Blue, and Ground/Ground.
The fan wiring is Black for the fan motor and Blue is for the lights. The White is neutral. So for you new fan you should hook the receiver Red and White wires to the Black and White wires coming out of the ceiling. The Red is not used and should be covered with a wire nut. Either the Red or Black from the ceiling would work but I chose the Black because if the fan was working before then that indicates the Black is connected for power. The Red as you said in your post is probably for a light switch. Hope that helps.
