Two options-
One, as another poster said, is to cut out a large square, put some backing boards into the ceiling (I use 1x4s rather than 2x’s), cut a new piece of drywall, tape/finish the joints, texture, paint. The problem with this is that you probably won’t be able to match the texture, and your joints will probably show.

Since your hole is large enough to reach into, I’d suggest the same process, but using the broken piece to patch with. Cut a piece of 1×4 (or 1×3 if x4 is too wide), about 6″ longer than the long measure of the hole. Hold it up, centered over the hole, and mark the edges of the hole. Slip it up into the ceiling and place it over the hole, using your marks to make sure it’s roughly centered (helps to make sure you don’t have all the overhand on one side). Shoot a couple drywall screws through the ceiling into the wood. Now you’ve got something to mount the patch to. Take the broken piece, brush off any flakey/crumbley edges, and check the fit. Then apply a good thick smear of drywall joint compound (you can buy it pre-mixed in small tubs) all around the edges of the patch, put it in place, and shoot a couple drywall screws into the backing board. If the resulting crack is small, you may be able to just dab spackle over it and get a decent patch without applying texture. If not, you can get texture in a spray can at your hardware. My experience has been that these spray-can textures do a so-so job of matching your existing texture. But with the irregular nature of your broken piece, and the camouflage of the ceiling fan, it should be good enough.
