When you take on your spring and summer renovation plans, make sure you take a note of all the things you need to do to create a new room in your home.

For most people the process goes something like this:

1. Decide a room needs to be remodeled.

2. Decide which pieces of furniture will stay and which will go.

3. Decide if the current flooring will stay or be replaced, and choose what to replace it with.

4. Decide what color of paint will go with the pieces of furniture and flooring choice.

5. Change flooring (if necessary)

6. Paint

7. Return the pieces of furniture that are being kept

8. Add new furniture (for those pieces that didn’t come back)

9. Add new accents

10. Enjoy

This is the recipe most people go by when doing home redecoration. But, one thing not on that list is a detail that is about to start sticking out like a sore thumb, the wall switch plates. You see, when most people get to that painting phase, they take off the wall switch plates, put the new coat of paint up, and then put the same, old, tired switch plates right back up on the wall. Why is that?

If you have just put a lot of time into all that painting and all the other details of this room, why are you ignoring something that is going to be sitting right on top of all that work, and call out to everyone in the room?

Instead, you need to make sure to treat the wall switch plates in your home just like all the other parts of the room. Each of them need to be looked at and considered as a part of the overall new vision of the space. If you have just spent tens of thousands of dollars on window treatments and other aspects of your home, why would you leave a set of one dollar plastic wall switch plates in place in the room? It doesn’t make sense, does it?

The good thing to know about wall switch plates is that they are a very affordable way to dress up a room. For the most part switch plates are going to cost less than 10 dollars each for pretty nice ones that will really dress up the wall they are attached to. They come in a number of materials and can even be found in fabrics and upholstery designs to completely match the colors and designs in the room.

If you really want to go all out, you can look for specialty wall switchplates, like those cast of bronze and modeled off old Victorian homes. These will cost a bit more, but will also be pieces that everyone who walks in the room will marvel at.

A room is not complete without switch plates, but it can be an eyesore with the wrong ones. Make sure as you take on your home remodeling projects that you have the right wall switchplates to complete any look you are tying to accomplish.

How do you wire an extractor fan with two black wires? Power fed from ceiling light.?

Hi, I need to replace the current bathroom fan with a new one. The existing fan is dead (hence the replacement). The power is being fed from the ceiling light and then from a light switch. The current fan has a yellow (switched live), red (live) and a blue (neutral) wire but the new one only has two black wires (1x 450v and the other 1.5o) how should I rewire or have I got the wrong fan? Please help!!!!!
