Today more than ever, people want to save money but just because you want to save money is no reason not to decorate your home. Anyone can decorate a home with a lot of money. If you want to decorate and be stylish on a shoestring, you just need a little imagination and a few tips. Here are 5 tips on how to decorate on the cheap but still look chic:

1. Cover the furniture you already have with slipcovers – If you have old furniture, do not despair. You can cover it with slipcovers that will look attractive and give the furniture a whole new lift. You can purchase slipcovers for a fraction of what you would pay for new furniture. Better than that, you can throw the slipcovers right in the wash when you would like and have them cleaned. When looking for slipcovers, look for those that will fit comfortably over your furniture and can be laundered in the washing machine.

2. Use an area rug for warmth and instant style – Nothing adds to a room like an area rug. Even if you have wall to wall carpeting, an area rug is one way that you can change the entire look of the room. You can even use more than one area rug in a room to give it definition. Area rugs are a lot less expensive than getting new wall to wall carpeting and can be functional as well. They can not only add instant warmth and style, they can protect traffic areas. Area rugs are relatively inexpensive and not a permanent altering change to any room, although they can give it a much needed lift.

3. Paint old furniture – Paint goes a long way, including on old furniture. You can get the cheap chic look by painting an old dresser white. By using a primer paint as well as white enamel or latex paint over the piece, you can give an old piece of furniture a whole new look. You can also change handles to give the old furniture a brand new look after painting as well.

4. Cover old furniture with rugs – Use stylish area rugs as upholstery pieces on some old furniture. If you are intimidated about upholstering furniture you will be pleased to know how easy it can be with an area rug. Area rugs are thick enough to cover the furniture without having to fuss with padding and are easily affixed with a staple gun. This can give a room an artistic as well as a chic look.

5. Cover furniture with linens- Using a tablecloth on coffee tables, end tables and even the kitchen table can not only hide old furniture but can also make the furniture look more inviting. Tablecloths can be easily made with an iron on hemming product and material that you purchase from the store. Even if you do not have any sewing experience at all, you can manage to create your own table coverings for your home. You can also use existing material that you have to make into table coverings.

Just because you are pinched for money does not mean that you cannot decorate your home. By using materials such as linens, paint and area rugs, you can give your home the cheap chic look.
