Does anyone know if this is against code (lighting question)?
We have a room off of our son’s bedroom that used to be a second story porch and one of the previous owners closed it in (sloppily) to create more living space. They did everything cheap and half-a**ed and we are trying to make this room somewhat presentable now. My question is…the only source of lighting in this room is a ceiling type flourescent light – mounted to the wall. It is near the top of the wall, near the ceiling but not on the ceiling. We really do not want to rip out the ceiling to run electricity for a proper ceiling light because the ceiling is one of the things they did right. Would it be ok if we got a large pendant light, hard wired it into the space where the flourescent light is (at the top of the wall) and then got a hook and swagged it to the middle of the ceiling? I know it won’t look as good as it would if we re-positioned the light but we are trying to do everything at least cost as possible right now.
Sure you can.
What I would do is get a swag kit with a plate cover to hide the electrical box.
Then run it to a cheap ceiling fan with pull cords to control the lights and fan.
You can also get a wireless switch for the fan so you can control the fan and lights from the doorway.
Ceiling fans are really very inexpensive and add a lot to make a room more cozy.
