furnace help please?

I have a gas mobile home furnace. Around the middle of Janurary it stopped running and I had to get the repair man over. turned out to be the thermostat. He replaced it with another one (the cheap kind with the lever to turn up and down) and now all of a sudden after 6 weeks it stopped running again. The first time it broke down he removed the thermostat which exposed these two red wires and when he crossed the wires the heat went on until he could come back with a new thermostat. Well where I live, we suddenly came down with a cold snap so in desperation I tried doing the same thing but nothing is happening. i know the pilot is running though and it cant be the fuse because when I unplugged the furnace and tried plugging in a lamp into the same outlit it works. Unless their are some sort of fuses in the furnace. The top of the furnace feels warm to the touch and that must mean the blower and motor are working I guess. any ideas what the problem is.
