How do I locate bad bulb in Christmas light strand?

I recently purchased a new strand of 300 “icicle” lights. They are the kind that are not supposed to all go out if there is one burned out bulb. However, they all work except for about the last 20 lights in the strand. I have fiddled with each of the lights that don’t turn on to see if there was a bad connection but that doesn’t seem to help. Is there an easier way to determine which one I need to replace. What I am doing right now is trying to take out each bulb and replace it with a spare until the rest of the strand turns on. This will take a while.

If all you need to work with is 20 lights your method of replacing each of them down the line, starting with a new one may be the easiest method.

There is a bulb tester that is sold that can help identify which bulb is bad WITHOUT REMOVING THE BLUB. These are fairly cheap and they do work, but if also takes time to work with them and it isn’t quite as easy as just pointing it at the bulb because depending on the type of string it may be the bulb before or after the one that is identified. I have spent many an hour using this bulb tester on some expensive “c6 like” lights that we have.

I think just about any home store would sell those such as Home Depot or Menards.

When reviewing the link , where they talk about the “shunt” it is often failure of the shunt to work as designed when a bulb burns out that causes the partial string to go out. (a loose bulb can also cause a portion of the string to go out.) Good luck!
