Ceiling fan hanging from discontinued gas line.?
I have a chandelier currently hanging from a discontinued gas line in the middle of my “dining room” in a circa 1900 home. I recently ran into a problem when trying to replace the chandelier with a ceiling fan/light.
The chandelier chain screws into an adapter that is screwed directly into the iron gas line that protrudes about two inches from the ceiling. The sconce to hide the wiring on the chandelier is held up with a “nut” from below.
On my new fan/light the sconce bears the weight of the fan and there is no way to attach it to the gas line. The sconce probably needs a flange or a wiring box to screw into. I am hesitant to do this because I would probably need to cut this old gas line with a hacksaw, and the ceiling around it doesn’t look too solid so a flange might not stay put.
Is there some sort of adapter flange for these old gas lines to hook a new style fan/light or a sconce to it?
You need a licensed electrician to fix this problem. Those gas lines may not be in use for gas lights, but there could still be gas service in those lines.
Never attach something like a chandelier to a pipe of any sort. This violates building codes everywhere!!
Do not cut the gas line, if it has gas in it, one spark and you and that nice Victorian home will be history.
