Exit signs appear in almost all public buildings, schools, churches, shopping malls, libraries etc. Many of these exit signs contain tritium. Tritium is a form of hydrogen which is radioactive. Tritium is produced in nuclear reactors and is also a component in thermonuclear warheads. Tritium, when combined with other chemicals in a sealed tube, will emit light. This useful combination of chemicals creates a continuous light source without the use of batteries or hard wired electricity. That is why so many people put tritium exit signs in their buildings. This is a wonderful product, as long as the seal never breaks!
This is how the EPA suggests you deal with a damaged tritium exit sign.
o Do not touch the sign, leave it alone.
o Evacuate the area at once
o Block off the area; do not let any traffic through.
o Open windows and doors to outside, ventilate!
If you think you or anyone was exposed to the tritium:
o Shower with soap.
o Change clothes and seal contaminated clothes in a plastic trash bag.
o Drink large amounts of water to flush your system.
o Collect a urine sample to be tested for contamination.
o Call the fire or police departments.
o Call the state radiation control program.
o Call the manufacturer of the sign for technical information.

Photoluminescent Exit Signs
If you use eco-friendly photo luminescent exit signs in your building, here is how you are recommended to dispose of them.

Okay, okay… a long way to make a point, but it is true. It is a new time and a new world. Tritium exit signs are a thing of the past. If you have never heard of them, then let me introduce you to photoluminescent exit signs.
High-tech luminescent plastic coatings applied to maintenance free metal sign blanks, and there you have it. It is modern day technology applied to cost efficient simplicity. Basically, photoluminescent signs are signs that use “glow in the dark” technology. They do not require electricity, wiring or radioactive power. There are no bulbs or batteries to replace, and no problems with disposal.
Here is how they work!
Place the signs above exit doors. Ambient light charges the high-end glow in the dark lettering and they are ready to go. The energy collected from the ambient light during daylight or business hours is stored and then released in the darkness as light. Best results occur when your exit signs are exposed to 54 lux of fluorescent lighting during occupancy of the building.
