I recently hired a decorator to help me with some spots that are lacking in my home. For the most part my house looks nice, but there are some areas that are incomplete. Here are some of the tips she gave me that may also help you.

1. Group artwork and photos into large or small groupings, don’t keep them spaced out really far part as individuals, unless they are really large.

2. Create a dramatic effect in a room so there is a focal point. Sometimes this means rearranging furniture, other times you simply add a large piece of artwork to the wall.

3. You can have blank spaces on the wall, not every square inch must be covered.

4. You can join wall groupings with a piece of furniture by leaning a piece of artwork against the wall and sitting on a table.

Additionally I found that the website bhg.com has some incredible before and after photos, examples of proper layout in a room and even instructions on how to hang photo groupings if you’re having trouble.

A lot of decorating is first just getting organized and making sure everything has a place. Going through your home and getting rid of things you haven’t used in a year is a great way to make some big progress. You can sell them or give them away to charity groups.

After you’ve done a little cleanup, take stock of what you have and start grouping things together that share a common theme. Only start shopping for new items if you have a definite need for a certain piece. Otherwise try to make do with what you have first.

The good thing about themes is they don’t always have to be permanent! If you like the 70′s peace signs and what not why don’t you paint your walls a nice shade of blue to reflect the wide open spaces and maybe do a feature wall in a nice ( not neon, but not cream) Yellow it makes the room look so open and inviting.and get some Peace sign curtain material to do the curtains on your windows. or maybe these hanging beads for your doorway.

Get you some nice shaggy carpets.. you can try yahoo groups to help you redecorate your home. There is one in particular site that allows people to give away freebies to people. They are trying to keep things out of the trash.So if you have something you no longer want give it away or if someone has something they don’t want and it looks good to you, grab it up.. One man’s junk is another’s treasure.

Accessories are good, now if you really want to make your room “Hippified” then take a bucket outside and get to dying some white shirts with your friends and do tie dies, you can do this with shirts pants anything old solid coloured bikinis come up like new if you tie dye them. Even if you don’t wear them you could string them up on a line to get the vibe going in your room. Lava lamps are great fun but you must remember to turn them off when you are finished, Maybe get a blacklight instead, and when you are wearing your tie dyed white shirts, the white will glow like crazy. You can even get some perfumes.. one I know of for sure is called “Poison” that glows in the dark. Good luck with your room.
