IC rated recessed lighting are common types of household fixtures, used to subtly illuminate specific areas especially in the kitchen and living rooms. They also make lovely home accents when used to highlight certain angles or objects through their light. Contrary to belief, they are actually very easy to install, and are an ideal do it yourself home project.

Tools and materials:

Step 1: The crucial and most important step in wiring IC rated recessed lighting is to first turn off the power. Once you have done this, double check.

Step 2: For rewiring of IC rated recessed lighting, attach the black and white wires from the switch to the wires in the light can. If you don’t have a wiring box, you can simply mount one beside the can. If the can has no ground wires, which come in green or copper, you can connect the switch’s ground wire to the wiring box.

Step 3: If you want to install new IC rated recessed lighting, you can avoid overloading the circuit by using CFL (compact fluorescent lights), which consume much less energy and will also save you money every month in your electric bill. Also remember that the wire you use should be the same as the rest of your house. If you are unsure, or currently have fabric wiring, consult with an electrician before proceeding.

Step 4: For the installment of new IC rated recessed lighting fixtures, the wiring should be arranged in parallel order. The white wire from the switch should be run by the first light, followed by the white wire from the light can, while the third white wire will run alongside it. Repeat the same process with the black wires as well as the ground wires. Finish this off by stapling all the cable with insulated staples onto the wood. If you are using lower gauge cable or thicker wire, you might need to use bigger twist caps than what is usually supplied by the manufacturer on the IC rated recessed lighting.

Step 5: If your home is not equipped with a wall switch from where you can provide wiring for new light, simply purchase a remote operated lamp switch, which you can find in virtually any hardware store. They are affordable and easy to use.

Step 6: Search for “hot” wires which you can connect to the IC rated recessed lighting through a cable. Trim the plug in the lamp control box, making sure you leave at least one foot of wire. The lamp control box and the new cable should be attached by connecting the 3 wires, so the cable ground and the control box are directly wired. Lastly, wire the power cord of the recessed box and plug into the socket output of the box. You also have the option of wiring the can to the internal connections of the socket.
