If you are a day sleeper, you know how difficult it can be to truly make your bedroom furnishings comfortable for both sleeping purposes during the day and living purposes at night. In order to see to it that your bedroom is suitable for sleeping during the day and living the nocturnal life, here are some tips to get you started.

Window Coverings

Obviously, most bedrooms have multiple windows, and no set of blinds is going to filter 100% of the light as you try to catch some ZZZ’s. However, there are several ways to go about darkening the room during the day. First of all, you should look for dark shades that can be pulled down during the day to help simulate darkness and keep your wood or metal bed away from direct light. Again, you won’t be able to filter out all light, but using a dark blue, brown, or black that matches your room décor can certainly help you sleep better. If this doesn’t work, try dark curtains, but be sure to open them wide on days when you are awake so that you don’t run the risk of creating a dungeon.

Lighting

Now that you’ve taken care of the problem of too much daylight during the day, you need to simulate daytime at night with your bedroom furnishings. You should have an overhead fixture with high wattage bulbs (try using compact fluorescent bulbs that require a small amount of energy to produce a large amount of light), as well as a lamp or two to add light to the room. The reason for this is that your body will not function properly with a complete lack of daylight and runs the risk of going into hibernation mode. Simulating bright daylight keeps your system on a schedule that makes the world “appear” to have a normal cycle that your body can follow.

Other Objects

If you are a day sleeper, avoid having your home office in your bedroom. Having objects unrelated to sleep near your full, queen or king size bed can hinder your ability to sleep when you are consciously aware of the daylight outside. Also, the noise of such an object in an otherwise quiet house can really be distracting to efforts to sleep. Anything that could possibly keep you from getting your beauty rest should be located in another room of the house. This will also help to get you out of the bedroom in waking hours so you don’t revert to night sleeping habits.

Other Considerations

If you don’t live alone, you might want to think about getting a sign for your door that says “do not disturb” or “day sleeper” so that others are reminded not to bother you during daylight hours. Also, if you can’t seem to filter out noise, you should think of furnishing your bedroom with a drawer full of earplugs – as long as you have an alarm loud enough to blast through them. And for those who really have trouble blocking out enough light, try canopy beds with full surrounding drapes that will further reduce the light that gets to you. A four poster canopy bed can work wonders in blocking out light, and an iron canopy bed can be reasonably priced.

You might also consider having a separate room for daytime sleeping. You can use a wrought iron daybed or modern futon as way to get a dual purpose out of one piece of furniture. These flexible pieces can be very comfortable both as a couch or bed and both daybeds and futons come in a wide variety of styles. Whatever your choice, make sure you get enough quality sleep to keep you healthy and relaxed for your next days activities.
