Wondering whether to buy a flash?

I'm an amateur photographer, and have been using natural light and occasional camera-flash (a little known for a filter coffee, lol) for years. Recently, I really want to improve my portrait photography, and I realize that the greatest portraits see are taken with flash or other lighting system.
