compact fluorescent bulb and dimmer?

Hi, I’d like to know if a compact fluorescent lamp (non specifically a dimmable one) can be used with a dimmer (but an old one, based on a rheostat and not working on the sine wave)

Most electronic-ballast CF lamps drive the bulb with a constant current.  You won’t change the brightness with a rheostat untl you get down to the minimum operating voltage, and then the bulb is likely to shut off.
