Before the 18th century, the only sources of light available for use after the sunlight hours were candles, gas lamps and lanterns. However, attempts were being made to develop an incandescent light alternative. These efforts bore fruit in 1809 when an English scientist, Sir Humphrey Davy, developed an incandescent arc lamp. Davys arc lamp operated by using a high-powered battery which was used to induce current through two charcoal strips.

Other attempts were made to improve the light bulb and in 1820, Warren De La Rue, developed a void tube through which an electric current would be passed using a platinum coil. While this was a remarkable improvement, it failed to make commercial sense due to the high cost of platinum. Forty years later, the English physicist, Sir Joseph Wilson Swan, then followed with an electric light whose filament was made of carbon paper. This product was found to be both cost effective and also long lasting.

In the US, Charles Brush developed carbon arc lamps for outdoor lighting. His invention in 1877 was followed two years later by Thomas Edison’s development of a filament that was made from carbon paper. Edison’s invention succeeded in producing a bulb that glowed for 1500 hours and produced sufficient light. In 1882, Lewis Howard Latimer improved this bulb and patented the making of carbon filaments.

The glass casing that was used for these early bulbs used to darken from the inside after a period and a remedy for this was developed by Willis R Whitney in 1903. The most remarkable development thereafter was the revolutionary discovery by William D Coolidge of the tungsten filament. This filament proved to be more long lasting than all previously developed filaments and is used to make light bulbs to this day.
