Many people don’t realize it, but a technology we believe to be very modern has actually been around quite a while. I am talking about LEDs-Light Emitting Diodes. A Russian scientist first created these in the 1920s. They have become very popular primarily for two reasons. They are extremely efficient and they can produce very bright light. They have been used in a plethora of different commercial applications. Just about anything with a light can use LEDs rather than incandescent light bulbs and today most do. However, I think there s one application that these work best for- flashlights.

When looking for a quality flashlight many people avoid the LED flashlights because they believe that they are more expensive than traditional flashlights using incandescent bulbs. These flashlights are worth every penny when compared to the other flashlight. The biggest thing is that they will use considerably less batteries in their lifetime and you will likely NEVER have to replace a bulb. In batteries alone, flashlights can pay for themselves. Another thing that LEDs work great in are mechanically powered flashlights. These flashlights are powered by human power with a crank wheel or by shaking. They require absolutely no batteries. This is only possible because of how little power LEDs use.

If you are just looking for a flashlight to carry around you can even get a LED light that is small enough to fit on your keychain. I’m sure you have seen these at one point or another. These really shine, no pun intended, during emergencies or black outs when there is no other light available.
