The lava lamp works on insoluble substances. Water and oil are insoluble substances. They differ in their densities as well. Water weighs much more than oil. But the densities are very different. Look out for two other liquids which are insoluble and very close in density.

The narrow glass bottle contains water and a combination of translucent wax, carbon tetrachloride or any other combination. The density of wax at room temperature is more than the water and less dense in warmer conditions. This happens because on heating water does not expand like the wax. The combinations used in lava lamp include different types of oil and soluble colorants. A hydrophobic solvent is also added to help lava combine. Paints and turpentine also work well. To fasten up the warming process anti-freezing ingredients are also added.

When heat is applied at the bottom, the liquid that is heavier absorbs heat and expands. As it is expanding the liquid reduces its density level. Since the liquids have very close densities, when the heavier liquid turns lighter it begins to rise, on cooling. Thus making it denser and heavier and as a result it sinks. All this happens at a very slow pace because dissipation and heat absorption are very slow processes and the density change is very slight.

The lava lamp uses heat and as well as light for working. The solid melts and begins to move when it is heated up to 37 degree Celsius by the electric bulb at its base. The wire coil at the bottom of the lamp promotes heat conviction and the mass of liquid is suspended.

The lamp is made up of two parts, solid part and the liquid part. Both are non-toxic and are made from secret chemicals. The bulb at the base heats up both the parts. The working of the lava lamp is easy to understand though its ingredients remain a trade-secret.

lava lamp help please..?

so i got a lava lamp… but the spongey thing at the bottom is sideways .. its not flat on the bottom like its supposed to be….what do i do? i read that you are NOT sposed to take off the cap..?

Don’t open it. Just set it up and the wax in it will work its way back to the bottom. Then just turn it on as usual
