Monarch of the house plant world, nothing can rival the amaryllis for size of bloom and brilliance of color at a time when snow covers the ground and temperatures are well below freezing in most parts of the country.

You can buy amaryllis bulbs that have been ‘cold-treated’ so that they’ll flower on schedule during the holidays. Choose a bulb that is large and has many live roots. Place it on top of a water-filled jar. This allows roots (not bulb) to trail in water. Let roots soak up extra moisture in this way four or five days before potting.

The length of time it takes for blooms to appear varies somewhat. As a general rule, you can expect to see fat buds begin to open in four to six weeks after potting.

Although the price of the choicest bulbs may seem high initially, you are purchasing a plant that can with proper care go on blooming each winter for years to come.

Warmth, Food, And Water Requirements

As natives of tropical climates, amaryllis like warmth and should be given a spot in your sunniest window until flowers begin to open. The bloom lasts longer if you then

move the plant to medium light.

Because the plants grow so rapidly, you sometimes feel that you can actually see those big stems push upward they need water often enough to keep the soil constantly moist. Once flower scapes appear, it’s wise to begin giving the plant a weak feeding of fertilizer once a week, thus helping the bulb to begin forming next year’s flower buds.

It takes a few years to get a really good crop of bulbs, but it can be done. Most like Hyacinth, Tulip, Daffodil and Gladiola reproduce by growing small bulbs around the area where the roots come out of the bulb.

After the bulb flowers, there will be a short period of just the leaves gathering food for the bulb to store for next spring when it blooms again. In about a month the leaves will be brown, this indicates the bulb has gone dormant.

Dig the bulb up and you will find the baby bulbs around the base of the Mother bulb. Collect them and plant them in the fall in locations where you want more bulbs. Don’t forget to plant the mother bulb again. Next spring they will come up and about half will flower. The following spring they all should flower plus some new baby bulb plants from the new bulbs you planted.

Splitting bulbs up is actually healthier for the bulbs. They don’t become overcrowded. Overcrowding reduces the number of flowers you get.

Some like Easter Lilly’s grow the baby bulbs, but also can be cut into quarters and each quarter will grow a new plant. You should leave the quartering to a nurseryman unless you don’t mind killing a few bulbs until you get the hang of it.
