When shopping for fluorescent bulbs or tubes, choose products based on their type, wattage and light output, and colour quality. Lamps earning the Energy Star label meet minimum government requirements for lamp life, light output, and energy use.

Type

For use in standard incandescent light fixtures, you need screw-in bulbs with integral ballasts. Use the manufacturer’s recommended bulb type for CFL fixtures. For outdoor fixtures, choose outdoor-rated or cold-start CFLs. In general, fluorescent bulbs are available for most fixtures.

Wattage and light output

Wattage is the amount of energy used by a light bulb, but most people think of this as brightness. However, the true measure of light output is lumens, which may or may not be listed on a product’s packaging. If it’s not, wattage is the next best indicator. To make things easier for consumers, bulb packages usually state the equivalent wattage of CFL to match the light output of a comparable incandescent bulb. The ratio is approximately 1 to 3; for example: A 13-watt to 15-watt CFL replaces a 60-watt incandescent; an 18-watt to 25-watt CFL replaces a 70-watt incandescent; a 23-watt to 30-watt CFL replaces a 100-watt incandescent.

Colour

The general quality or look of a bulb’s light is indicated in its temperature value, or correlated colour temperature, which is measure in degrees Kelvin (K):

- For a warm, yellowish glow similar to incandescent light, choose a bulb in the 2,700K to 3,000K range. These are often described as “soft white”.

- For brighter, cooler light that’s closer to the glow of daylight, look for 4,100K or higher colour temperatures. These may be described as “bright white”, “cool white”, or “natural”.

For reading lamps and study areas, you might consider buying a full spectrum bulb, which is designed to mimic the full spectrum of sunlight. This makes reading easier and helps reduce eye strain.

If you can’t find the right bulb in your local store, you can probably order it online. General retailers typically carry a very limited range of lighting products, and they mostly stock economy-quality bulbs. A quick internet search or a visit to a local lighting dealer will give you a better idea of what’s available.
