Black sheets (especially if not satin) are a choice many people regret – they show every bit of lint and every dead skin cell that lands up on them. Ew gross, in simple terms. I would advise you toward dark purple or burgundy (like dark red wine) instead of black. That advice comes both professionally and from personal experience. At 16 yrs old I got black sheets and within 3 months I was fed up with the urge to wash them daily and turned them into a crazy canopy thing that hung on my ceiling for a while. So yes, black canopy sounds good.

Lava lamps and Christmas lights are great for ambiance. You might want to consider rope lights — they use very little electricity, do not get hot to the touch, and come in a variety of colours including a really cool purple.

The small couch will offer you more versatility than the bean bag chair would. If a friend has to sleep over, the couch won’t be too uncomfortable, you can spread out books and stuff on a couch which makes it better for homework or personal projects, and it seats more people and it’s just more comfortable.

It’s a wise decision to work with the beige you already have — saves a bit on paint and labour. Instead of going for a dark brown like chocolate, look for a more grey-brown so your walls will have a better colour harmony with the purple (sheets and acccents). A really neat way to make the beige and darker grey-brown flow together better is to buy a can of paint in the darker colour but in a glossier finish (if your walls are being painted eggshell finish, opt for semi gloss) and use a stencil to do a simple pattern that will overlap onto the less shiny version of the same colour and onto the beige. It’s amazing how this technique can really pull two colours together.
