The problem that you are probably having is the fact that you might be using the wrong soldering iron for the job. It was the problem I had in the beginning. There are at least 12 different kinds of soldering irons that I know about but only one is meant for copper-tape method stained glass.

These are irons designed for the solder with the higher lead content that is meant for stained glass and are designed to stay hotter for longer without burning out.

If you are using the one like this: http://www.m-99.co.uk/Electrical/Soldering_Iron/24v_soldering_iron.jpg, chances are that your iron is getting too hot, this might be why the tips are going. These point irons are made to heat up fast to connect wiring but not to stay hot for extended periods so you may be going through soldering tips because you are burning them out. You may also be having the problem that the copper tape lets go of the glass because the glue melted.

These stained glass soldering irons are relatively expensive but they last for a long time if you take care of them. I live in South Africa and paid R200-00 for mine so $20-00 to $25-00 or €10-00 to €15-00.
