Storage for tools

Storage units for your tools can be pegboards or a hanging cabinet with locking doors, or rolling tool cabinets with drawers and locks. Tools are dangerous and safety should be your main concern. If you provide safe storage for all your tools, accidents can be prevented.

Workbench

You should plan to have a workbench in your area. It is handy for large projects that need cutting, clamping, or gluing. If you have the space, you should get a freestanding workbench so you can move around it. Also, you want to have enough room if you are using power tools.

Lighting

Lighting is important for your workshop area. Overhead fluorescent lights are inexpensive and they provide good illumination. You can use task lights that clamp to your workbench for close work.

Wiring

Make sure your work area is properly wired. Power tools are grounded so you will need outlets that have three-prong plugs for grounding.

Cleanliness and Ventilation

You should keep your work area clean and well ventilated. Sawdust is a fire hazard. Chemical fumes are also dangerous. A wet-dry vacuum can be used to clean sawdust from your floor and workbench. When working with chemicals, you should open doors and windows for ventilation. Flammable items should be stored in a cool, dry place out of the reach of children.

Safety

The objects in your workshop are sharp and powerful. Use safety precautions when working. Read the instruction manual for your power tools. You should plan your project so you know exactly what you are going to do so you can anticipate any problems. Use clamps so you can keep your hands free.

Maintain your tools. Lubricate moving parts and keep blades sharp. Test your tools before using them. Do not use power tools in a damp area and never leave them running when they are not in use.

When working, you should dress appropriately. You should not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Wear safety goggles and earplugs when needed. Do not let your children play or run around your work area if you are working on a project and can not keep an eye on them.

Safety should always be uppermost in your mind when working on home improvement projects. You are more likely to accomplish your tasks if you know where your tools are and you have an organized space to work.
