Anyone considering installing garden lighting can be forgiven a moment of unease. Garden lighting uses electricity and, as we all know, generating electricity creates carbon dioxide, widely believed to be a major cause of climate change. Will you be able to enjoy your garden lighting with a clear conscience?

This kind of thinking has spurred a new interest in low-energy lighting technologies and, in particular, in specifying 5 Watt fluorescent and LED outdoor light fittings in preference to halogen.

Fluorescent technology has been around for decades, so it is tried and tested. It’s not the most attractive type of lighting, but we know it works. LEDs, however, are the new kid on the block. So just how well do they perform, and are they really a viable alternative to halogen in garden lighting schemes?

First, the good news. In terms of energy efficiency, LEDs definitely measure up. The MR16 LEDs used in place of MR16 dichroic halogen lamps in outside spotlights use just 5 Watts per hour (or less). That should be green enough for all but the most hair-shirted eco-warriors. It also makes them extremely cost-effective to operate, especially if you have your outdoor lights turned on for long periods of time, or if you have a large number of exterior lights.

Another advantage of LEDs is that they generate virtually no heat. Even after they have been switched on for several hours, they are only very slightly warm to the touch. This makes them perfect for gardens where children might play at night, or for public places like pubs and restaurants where health & safety is always a consideration. LEDs are also inherently safe because, like halogen, they require a 12 volt electricity supply, rather than 240 volts.

The third advantage of LEDs is they last a long time. While good quality MR16 dichroic halogen lamps have a life of about 5,000 hours, MR16 LEDs should last about 18,000 hours. As well as being an inherent virtue (most of us have better things to do than change light bulbs), this long life makes LEDs a good choice for inaccessible exterior locations where changing a lamp is difficult.

LEDs do, however, have one or two disadvantages. Although LED technology is improving all the time, MR16 LEDs currently only produce about half the light of a standard 20 Watt MR16 dichroic halogen lamp. This is fine for many uses, but you will be disappointed if you use an LED to light a tall tree. The colour rendition isn’t quite as good as halogen, either, although the ‘Warm White’ colour option comes a close second.

Another shortcoming is that, unlike halogen lamps which can be bought in a choice of beam widths, MR16 LEDs are only available in one beam width. This limits their flexibility when creating more sophisticated outdoor lighting effects. And whereas MR16 dichroic halogen lamps offer you a choice of Wattages ranging from 20 to 50 Watts, MR16 LEDs are only available in a 5 Watt option. Finally, MR16 LEDs are considerably more expensive than dichroic halogen lamps – although their long life should, over time, soften the blow of the initial outlay.
