why did my light bulb burning right away?

I just put a light hanging in my kitchen and when lit (12V 50W halogen lamp) immediately shone brightly and went out. I removed the bulb just to make sure and was burned. I was careful not to let the oil from my fingers get in the bulb when inserting. Why are burned away? Should I try another bulb or just burn too? Papilao seems he was right, the bulb i had before was 120 volts, 50 watts. I guess I do not mind burning the bulb because I'm not going to bother with a transformer ... I'll just buy a 120 volt bulb. Thank you.

It is best to make sure that the power in the takeover of 12 V is really more bulbs burn before.
