Behind about 1/2 inch of plaster you will find wooden lath that usually measures 1 1/2 inches wide by 1/4 or 3/8 inch thick. If the canopy (the piece of the light fixture that ends up flush with the ceiling) is large enough to cover it, you can leave the original box and screw a new, longer brace through the plaster into the lath outside the original box. /you can use molly or toggle bolts for heavier fixtures and tuck the wires, once connected, into the same old box. To replace the box, I have used a pry bar to break it loose leaving the nut on the pipe in the ceiling. pop out the hole in the back of the new box and use a new nut to screw onto the pipe securing the new box. All of the materials are available at your home/hardware store. Make sure the new box is not deeper that the original or in will hang below the ceiling.
