Installing a new ceiling fan…?

and their was no pre-existing light or fan in the room, but their is a wall switch that controls one of the outlets, what i want to do is get that outlet off the switch and use that switch to power the fan with the light, my only problem is, is getting power to the fan from the switch, the bedroom is on the second floor and their is no attic, so what is the best and easiest way to go about fishing these wires up through the wall and then across the ceiling to the fan? Im tryin to avoid having to cut out the wall or ceiling as much as possible, any and all help will be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance!

I am a veteran electrician (since 1988) and I have fished many wires thru walls. Early in my career I did 100′s of residential rewires.

It is not an easy task often times to get wire thru a wall and into an attic but not impossible in most cases. If you have room in the attic to do so you can drill a 3/8″ – 1/2″ hole thru the top plate in the wall above your switch. Make sure the power is off to this area so you wont get a shock if you accidentally drill into a live wire. With power off to the switch, remove the switch and carefully open another hole in the switch box if one is available. You will need a helper for the rest of this. Get a length of fixture chain about 10′ long. Drop it thru the hole u made in the attic. Using a short piece of wire with a hook on it, fish around inside the wall thru the box opening until you snag the chain. Someone will need to be above holding the chain so that it does not fall thru the wall. Once you snag the chain pull it thru the hole in the box. Attach your Romex cable to the chain. To do this strip back about 3″ of the sheath and then cut off the black and white wires leaving the bare wire. Bend the bare wire through the end of the chain making it nice and flat. Make a couple wraps of electrical tape around the wire and chain to hold it in place. Dont wrap too much tape or it will be difficult to pull thru the holes. Have your helper begin to pull the chain slow and easy while you guide the cable up the wall. Keep pulling until you have enough to reach the area that your fan will be installed. To install the fan use an approved box for ceiling fan installs. Follow the directions to install the box and support. Ceiling fans are heavy and vibrate, you dont want it to come down unexpectadly someday while you are sitting under it. There you have it, have installed 100′s of fans, lights, etc. in this same manner over the years. Only time this does not work is when you do not have room in the attic to get a drill and bit in to drill the hole. If that is the case, you will just have to cut a hole in the wall just enough to get a drill into the wall to drill thru the top wall plate. Then its a matter of patching the hole. Hope this helps.
