I’m stealing these ideas from HGTV, but they have featured these types of spaces with either large framed artwork (if the ledge is built in and there’s a wall behind it), or with larger knick-knacks like baskets of greenery mixed with large pottery or decorative plates. The globe sounds like a good idea, but if you don’t know where to find it (EBAY?) then it might be better to work with things more readily at hand.

Three things to think about:

1. Please be sure the items you display on the ledge fit in with the “mood” of the other items in your room. (For instance, the globe would work well in an office area or a room with a manly theme)

2. Make sure everything is to scale. If the area of the ledge is large, then you need to display larger items like the artwork or globe. If those shelves are smaller, then the items you mention (antique clocks. photos, etc) should fit nicely.

3. Remember that eventually you will have to dust whatever you put on these ledges. The simpler you keep the display, the better off you will be when it comes to maintenance.
