Decorating help for living space….?

I have a large, bright living room (three windows), with sage green carpet (which has some greyish tones more than green), and a chocolate brown couch. I found a rug at walmart . com (better homes and gardens london bridge, with chocolate, sage, and creme floral). Well, my questions are a)what color on the walls/they are currently white b)what other accent colors can I bring in with these colors-I was thinking deep roses colors/floral pillows c)what color/fabric curtains?

I’d pick up that creme from the rug for the wall color. If it leans more toward ivory or off-white, I’d warm it up a bit and go a little more deep and creamy. I’d go with a drape the same creamy color, but I would border the edges of the panels with the chocolate brown color of the sofa. Or, you could use the creamy color for your drapes and add on a deep border – 12 – 18 inches of the chocolate brown. Any seamstress – or you, if you have minimal sewing skills, could do this.

I have a feeling your sofa is leather. If so, I’d go with a more casual fabric, such as cotton or twill or linen blend for the window treatments.

I just looked up the rug at Walmart. It’s very nice. It has a lot of tans and creams in it. After seeing it, I’m still advising the creamy wall color. Overall, it’s dark, and with your chocolate brown sofa, you need some lighter color in your room.

I wouldn’d choose floral pillows, and I’m not sure about the rose colors you mentioned. I think some plum colored accents would work well with the sage and brown, but finding just the right color will be tricky. You’ll need to experiment a little and bring some paint chips or fabric swatches home. I’ve bought rugs and pillows and taken them back to the store because the colors did not work with the room – lighting can be a factor, too. Look at some shades of plums, but make sure they are not muddy hues. If you could find pillows with subtle stipes in hues of sages/greens, browns/tans, and plums, it would be very pretty.

Another color that might work is a peachy coral color. Unfortunately, the colors I’ve mentioned are not going to be easy to find, like your golds and reds, etc.

Just look around. Metal wall art in the deep brown finish would go nicely with the rug. Mirrors would add additional depth and richness to the room.

Add some greenery, either real or silks. With the leafy patten in that rug, a ficus tree in a corner would be so pretty. Put a can light at the base of it, and you’ll love the beautiful patterns that filter up through the tree and play on the ceilings. It will mimic the pattern of the rug. You’ll be pleased with the effect.
