Being a professional designer is tough. No, really. We all aren’t celebrity designers and we don’t all have clients with a gazillion dollars to spend. What we do have are real clients with real budgets who need real solutions.

The problem is with the internet. Yes, bloggers in particular on the internet. The internet seems to be a playing field where decorators meet designers head on for a competition of the best design ideas.

Now, stay with me. I am not anti-decorator. I just happen to be a certified interior designer who is a professional member of ASID. Say that five times fast! With that said, I sometimes see some solutions presented by people who have been told by their great aunty that they just have such a knack for design. So with Aunty’s support behind them, they call themselves an interior decorator and write a blog. Not just any blog, but a blog about doing interior design for cheap.

For example, you need something to cover your windows. You can’t afford custom drapery. What do you do? My advice is to wait until JC Penney’s has their drapery on sale and buy from them. You can get nice drapery from them and when it is on sale, that’s even better. You can choose nice pre-made window treatments that look great.

The cheap decorator/blogger advice would have you go get a bolt of fabric, use stitch witchery to “sew” your fabric into drapes and hang it up. It will look less than awesome, especially, if you bought a bolt of fabric with a printed design all over it. The backside of the fabric is not pretty and will be seen by people on the outside of your house, giving off the cheap impression, not frugal. Then you realize that your “cheap solution” looks cheap and you really want to replace it. Well, when you decide to replace your craft project of a window treatment, you end up paying for the window treatment twice. Does that sound wise?

There is a difference in cheap and investing your money wisely. Remember that doing something cheap more often than not comes out expensive, so try to do it right the first time. If you’re not sure, ask a professional. For the hour you pay for with a professional, you will save yourself the money in the long run.
