A corporation is a form of doing business. There are economies of scale with retail – the warehousing, merchandising and other overhead functions, the buying power, the lower cost of capital – all of which ultimately benefit the consumer in the form of lower prices. While these companies squeeze out a few local or regional chains, I guess I just don’t know why that upsets you – small and mid-sized businesses have performed very, very well in the last ten years, typically by finding a niche, and they really didn’t treat their workers any better than Wal-Mart treats their workers – those jobs are starter jobs anyway, worked mostly by teenagers and immigrants and a few housewives working part-time. So, the consumer has benefited and nobody seems to have lost out. I suppose if you like one suburb to look different from the others you’ve lost out but that’s how it works – the world doesn’t comform to one person’s ideals. My grandmother missed having fountain sodas at drugstores and mini-restaurants in department stores. I miss independent donut shops. It’s important to remember that the consumers directed this allocation of resources – producers try to meet demand efficiently. Demand is what it is. Demand is the dog, supply is the tail.
