There’s nothing that says ‘it’s party time!’ quite like a series of lights blazoned across your railings, your gutter and your porch. These beautiful lights can enhance safety, make it easier to find your home, and enhance the atmosphere of your social events for a very easily afforded price and almost no time spent putting them up. There’s a lot of variations on string lights out there, however, and you might be happier if you figured out what you wanted before you put down your hard-earned cash.

String lights all function from a common base of strings with bulbs mounted frequently on them. Some types, called more specifically rope lights, come inside see-through tubes to protect the lighting. Others will have the bulbs hanging freely from subdued strings. The former offers more protection, but the latter is also a perfectly viable choice, and they both have their unique aesthetic differences to appreciate. Rope lights are only barely more expensive than other string lights, so price isn’t a factor for most people when choosing between the two.

Other than that, the major differences in string lights all come down to one thing: the bulb. The shape, size, coloration, and frequency of placement of the bulbs is what makes the whole impact. But the great part is, you don’t have to be stuck with bulbs you don’t like! If you have a Christmas party, and then a New Year’s party, you can simply change the bulbs from multi-colored to white. Bulbs of the appropriate size for string lights are between ten and twenty cents on average, so it’s not a huge investment, and certainly better than buying two separate sets of lights unless you simply hate screwing and unscrewing bulbs.

If you’re looking for something cheap that still stands out, you might want to try paper lantern string lights. They’re just as cheap as typical Christmas lights, at about fifteen dollars, and are unique enough to make an impression. At the opposite end of the price range, there are such luxurious lights as crystal globes, solar-powered lights, and lights with bulbs shaped in various fanciful designs, from fruits and vegetables to a number of Asian themes. Don’t be persuaded into paying more than fifty dollars or so for these, however, as anything much higher for a simple string lights set, no matter how beautiful, is a ripoff.

Here’s a last hint for getting good lights at lower prices: if you can afford to, try to buy your lights just after Christmas. Sales and used goods are incredible then, and you’re not likely to find a cheaper time of year to buy outdoor lighting. Remember you can swap out bulbs if necessary! Don’t compromise on what you want for your outdoor lights; if you look around for long enough, you’ll be sure to find what you need without having to pay much.
