Storage Tips

Even in the very smallest of connecting spaces you can often find a cranny where storage can be accommodated. In many cases, by filling in a recess in this way, the architectural symmetry of a room can be much improved at the same time. Drawing up a room plan will reveal just where these spots are. If you want these newly created housings to appear as part of the structure, the surface of the door front should be treated in exactly the same way as the rest of the wall space (wallpapered or painted) and the door furniture should be minimal.

Book storage in a home is often a problem, but corridors offer an excellent site. Being narrow in depth and decorative in appearance, books can be happily accommodated in passageways, lobbies and hallways — but do remember to light them appropriately, so that books can be removed and examined in comfort. A valuable space for storage that is often ignored is the. area above a doorway. Although not easily accessed, this space can be useful for the long-term storage of items infrequently required.

Lighting

Safety considerations should be top of your list. Arranging for at least one light that can be left on could either contain a low-wattage bulb or, better still, be controlled by a dimmer switch for minimal overnight lighting. A timer switch attached to, say, a hall light may also deter would-be burglars in your absence.

You may well think that because there are no specific activities being undertaken in connecting spaces, there is no need of ‘task’ lighting, but the act of circulating through your house does require good lighting if it is to be done in safety. In particular light should be directed towards floors so as to highlight any change of level (this especially applies to stairways). A system of two-way switching that allows you to switch on a light from one position and off upon leaving the area from a different exit is essential.

Exterior lighting at a front door is often neglected, yet it is needed not only to offer a warm welcome to visitors but to also illuminate the knocker/door bell/letterbox, and to allow you to view your visitor before opening the door.
