It used to be that chandeliers were only for the more “well-off” homeowners, where they would place the large fixtures over dining room tables; today however, chandeliers are not just for dining rooms or for the wealthy. They are moving their way into other areas of the home such as bedrooms and foyers. It is for this reason that chandeliers should not be ignored in planning your home lighting scheme.

In the past, the only locations you would see chandeliers were the upscale homes of the wealthy; now it is just as common (if not more so) that you can find chandeliers in starter homes. Home lighting has changed with the times. Chandeliers are being re-invented to fit a broader range of prices, sizes, and styles.

The American Lighting Association has even come out and said that kitchens and bathrooms have become popular places for hanging chandeliers. This may sound odd, since most images that come to mind when speaking on chandeliers include large, glimmering crystal lights. Many chandeliers today come in drastically different styles, though. In home lighting, chandeliers have become more important due to their reduction in size and the increase of styles. Smaller chandeliers have become more popular recently, especially in the bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. A small breakfast nook in the kitchen can quickly gain elegance by adding a small chandelier overhead. Just by adding this small chandelier, a sense of intimacy can quickly be added to this niche area; in fact, some mini-chandeliers are taking the place of wall sconces.

Home lighting trends typically begin in the living room and filter down to the bedrooms, but in this case the trend of smaller chandeliers has hit all areas of the home at once. While glaring lights over islands in the kitchen are being replaced with designer chandeliers, gaudy overhead lighting in the bedroom is also being replaced with an elegant chandelier. One of the great advantages of chandeliers is that they can easily match the glamorous nature of the master bedroom and master bath.

With the trend towards chandeliers, it is important to remember that chandeliers cannot provide all the light a room needs. The arrangement of one overhead lighting source either casts light down or diffuses it in all directions, which affects spatial quality by creating dramatic shadows and dim rooms. To solve this problem in your home lighting scheme, think of the chandelier as the “central” fixture in the room, and then add other sources of complimentary light such as sconces, pendants, or recessed lighting. It is important to remember that chandeliers have made great strides in home lighting in recent years, but they cannot carry the load themselves.
